NATIONAL CONFLICT ANDY HAYDEN & HIS COMMENTS
In May/June 2010, comments made by one man defending another's alleged actions caused many New Zealanders to debate whether he was right or wrong to make public comments on: ,[object Object]
Sex & Rape And whether he should continue to represent NZ because of these comments.  THE CONFLICT
What Happened? Andy Hayden, a former All Black and NZ's honorary Rugby World Cup Ambassador at the time, while supporting another former All Black over his alleged rape of a comatose teenager, publicly  suggested that women raped by sports stars may be partly to blame . CONFLICT CAUSE
HOW DID IT AFFECT US? Public Opinion was divided.  Many supporting Hayden because of who he was (ex All Black, rugby icon) and some partly agreeing with what he said. Many opposing Hayden because what he said  had hurt the feelings of women in general and those women who had been rape victims.

  • 8. Rape Crisis Agencies said he was irresponsible to start a public debate on such a sensitive issue.
  • 9. THE PEACEFUL SOLUTION After a lot of Media coverage and pressure from NZ politicians and the majority of the NZ public, calling for him to be sacked as the NZ Rugby World Cup Ambassador, Andy Hayden resigned as the Ambassador in July 2010.
  • 10. LAST WORD I think Andy Hayden's resignation stopped the debate of that time but the views highlighted by his comments may be ongoing views of some New Zealanders whether they admit it or not.
